El big brother.

March 5, 2010 3 Comments

My intention a few months ago, was to print out this open letter and perhaps deliver it to a facilities manager person or what not. Forgetting that we are in 2010 and not 1993, I posted my ramblings, thoughts and ideas here – on the interwebs.

November 1st, 2009 | Ignored shoppers

My girl calitexican, the observative keen eye of the pack for all surrounding things and behaviours, had posted this over our Change Your Life blog. I was stoked and it raised a certain additional curiosity within me, thinking – realllllyyyyyyy ?!?!??? (insert super-good funny tonality here)

I thought well, maybe, “someone” read that post and said, hey – maybe some cute little racks in the front of the store could attract more bike shoppers that are looking for phone chargers for their devices (ultimately the one reason I had to stop at best buy in the first place) and have them park their little bikes within sight – and so it goes. Shiny new red cherry racks outside, and not next to the dumpster on the side street, where the degenerate bike thieves and their vans hang out at. argghhh.
And a tremendous thank you to el big brother, or el best buy, or red bike-rack-vendetta-for b-as-in-bikes out there. Whoever you are, you get a Bikes and The city caffeinated thumbs up. Swoon.

I’d also like to thank long-time reader Peter, for sending the photos below. I honestly was super stocked to hear it from him when he was telling me about his ‘stopping at best buy and coming across these new racks’ experience. I really don’t mind that is a “big box store” as many people consider it, if you need a piece of gadgetry or charger and can’t do the internet thing, then you got there and that is that.

The fact that Best Buy has given some thought to this issue, and actually followed through to make some changes in the bike-parking structure (because, who really wants to park to tilted handicapp pole signs – not me…) and place a number of new racks right outside their big shiny doors, is pretty cool. Maybe they had it heard it before, maybe someone had worked on this project for awhle -either way- Thanks!!

Tour del Taco

Our small early AM SF crew roamed over the eastbay lands to ride bikes and eat tacos. It was a very nice event organized by the East Bay Bike Coalition, Oaklandish and the California Taco Truck Blog [link here]. It was a very nice event and although the weather wasn’t super cold, it was damp enough to make your fingers annoyed. That’s when the champurrado kicked in. Ade and I hadn’t hung out pretty much since the holidays, and it was nice to get back in the grove. The beggining of the year is always a strange set of weeks that just seem to fly past you. oyyy.

Anyways, to the best of my space cadet mentality, my camera’s battery was not to its fullest. BUT first and foremost, I’d like to thank my peeps for waiting for me in the AM, I was running quite late. Pre-taco stop: coffee – du’h.

Here Ade snapped a picture of what our crew does best. Ride to chillax. We chat, we eat, we talk bikes and food. Good stuff. Eric and I here, debating which tacos we’re gonna check out next.

Found a nice article on SF bike polo featuring Joel Winters. I have met Joel briefly on Polk street with his lady friend, very very cool people – but more on that soon.
You can read the online version of the article here:
Personal Best: Bike polo a great combo for Winter by David Liepman

Back in August Ade, James and I ran into the bike polo guys at Golden Gate Park. Bike polo aint no joke, that stuff must work you out hard. You can check out the post here: Polo, Anyone? by Ade

Wednesday women.

February 24, 2010 3 Comments

I had the chance to meet two wonderful women on wheels this past Saturday during the Oakland Taco Truck ride. (+post soon). It is always very inspiring to hear from other local women, riding their bicycles and sharing their story, their perspective and experiences from the bike lanes in the Bay Area.
It also touched my bikey heart when a woman that reads Change Your Life. Ride a Bike! talked to Ade about the collective blog that we are proudly part of, which is a collab by 4 women.
We are present and we are here to ride. Let’s go my women, get on those bicycles!!!

♥ It has been a pleasure meeting you ladies!!

Skulls attract more skulls.

Where to next?!
Where to next?!

I’d like to dedicate this post to the glitteri skulls that now keep me company whenever I ride the smurfette, my Italian steel beauty which gets no love (ok does twice a month count?).
Stephen gave me a little cute saddle bag with skulls (red glittery eyes!) Christmas gift and it matches my bracelet cuff, which has a skull on it. How cool?!
Apparently skulls attract more skulls. Here are some recent pictures at Flora Grubb gardens.

The bag is made by Krieg cycling bags, and I looked it up and they carry other cool funky designs, seems like a nice small company based out of Spokane WA.

Here is a recent photo of Stephen and I on our way to the ballet with a group of friends, and he thought I wouldn’t post this picture because we were not standing next to bikes or coffee “and some cute boys.” Meeeh –

yea yea meli watever
And here are a couple of pictures he sent me awhile back from the ArtCrank poster show.

me either saying something silly, or being a clown.

Actually during the show, he was the one that brought to my attention that my poster was the only one to say San Francisco on it. Coolness. It was good times, I loved seeing so many awesome pieces!

Stephen is a huge bicycle fanatic, we talk bikes, coffee and other geeky cool stuff. In 2009 he would “commute” to work and i say it in quotes because that would take me like 8 hours to do!! – he would bike to work “only” for about 50 miles in under 3 hours. ummm, yeah. Crazy nut.
I’d also like to thank him for being such an awesome friend and supporter of my bike blog ramblings.

Can’t wait to ride with you again whenever you are ready (he had a gnarly bike related injury), and my best wishes for your shoulder to get well soon!!

Meet Eric.

Faemanized

Friend of the bike, bloggy, coffee peeps. You might have seen him around the blog a few times, but for a gloomy Monday that we will have (Am I the 1% in SF that loves this weather?!) I feature his awesome collection of sweaters, I have taken these photographs between June last year and fairly recent. Thought I’d share this styling man on wheels. He also has a great collection of vintage steel bicycles, but that’s a whole other big chapter.. 😀
Ride on Eric!
