Laura Domela is a photographer based out of Portland, OR. I have an affinity with portraits and photographs that represent movement and daily life seen with a fresh creative angle.
This bicycle book, described below, is in my book radar. She has a few books available for purchase ‹here›.

FIETSEN: DUTCH [V] RIDE A BICYCLE; CYCLE, [N] BICYCLES. These photographs were taken in Amsterdam, the Netherlands between 21 September and 25 September, 2005. I spent approximately an hour each day photographing bicycle commuters from an apartment on Marnixstraat, and over the span of four and a half days I photographed more than 1600 bicycles.

Event: The Tour de Fat /Roundup

July 21, 2008 1 Comment

Myriads of gorgeous bikes, customs, outfits, great people and great beer. Musica, the mighty SF Bike Coalition (and its lush service, bike valet) and many other wonderful things, including the funeral of the black escalade.

Handmade delicious

July 9, 2008 No Comments

While most of the bike frames are made/built/painted massively overseas, some little cute exquisite bikes are still handmade. The NAHBS -North American Hand Made Bicycle Show (in 2008 was in Portland, OR. Feb 8-10

Here is the small excerpt from CyclingNews: Talented hands converge on the Pacific Northwest
“In addition to its eye candy appeal, NAHBS has also seemed to serve as a fairly reliable of indicator for the general bicycle market. Track bikes were shown heavily in 2006 and many larger manufacturers began offering their own fixed-gear models shortly thereafter. Similarly, last year’s show offered up a heavy dose of commuter-type machines and several bigger industry players that weren’t already involved in the segment jumped in afterwards. Whether it’s a cause-and-effect relationship or simply a symptom of the handbuilt industry’s ability to respond more quickly to market trends is anyone’s guess but an interesting trait nonetheless.
They also got a nice album with cute ones CyclingNews.com NAHBS 2008 Album

And big eye candy (like this sweet ride) from the Core77.com site.
Pegoretti Bike and Brooks saddle unite. I’m surprised Mr.Landis isn’t all over this one

Que Bonita bike! look at those gorgeous fenders.
Click here for the rest of Core77’s NAHBS album

If you plan to be in Indiana in a few months, let me know what is new at the 5th Annual NAHBS in Indianapolis, IN Feb 27-March 1, 2009
This is a city related post, in a way. The explotion within the last few years with Brooks Saddles has been tremendous. Did you know Brooks England also has a Women Specific Saddle line? It’s quite comfy. Not all riders are created equal, but Proofide helps.

Today’s SF chronicle: Bamboo Bikes have benefits

July 6, 2008 No Comments

The LAtimes had done a wonderufl interview with Craig Calfee sometime ago, but their archives are only free for a certain time. Today, The San Francisco Chronicle published a great article (read it here) about Craig Calfee: his bamboo designs, custom frame bikes and Ghana travles/programs).

It is also very inspiring and the way that he incorporates craft, the whole bicycle ritualistic experience and being in touch with the earth, is just great. He is also part of the article I posted in todays SF chronicle posts 🙂

Today’s SF chronicle: Custom Bike Frames

July 6, 2008 No Comments

Great story about these three great thinkers and contributers to the bicycle culture and its wonderful science and craft that goes in the making of the bicycle and frame from the ground up (including all bike lovers, engineers, sustainability, the joy and all the good things riding a bicycle brings to your personal experience)
In The San Francisco Chronicle today published a great article about:
1) Craig Calfee (his bamboo designs, custom frame bikes and Ghana travles/programs “It is wonderful to work with natural materials that just grows out of the ground”)
2) Mike Ahrens (Ahrens Bicycles, grew up in San Jose riding BMX and dirt bikes)
3) Bernie Mikkelsen (Mikkelsen frames, builts primarly with steel material, “Carbon breaks? Throw it out. A steel bike never dies”)

I’m a huge steel frame fan. Read the complete article (includes video media) about these 3 Bay area bike/frame makers at the sfgate link here.

Bernie Mikkelsen in Alameda, has been building bikes for 34 years.
He also suffered a stroke in 2006, and is now back in the shop (with assisted help)
Truly inspiring.

100 Cars

July 4, 2008 No Comments

is the title for this print. Im currently liking his stuff mucho. This reminds me of a rush hour around downtownSF-embarcadero area. It could easily relate to many cities becoming zoos of human behavior and that is perhaps why I am quite fascinated by this particular one.
