I have been a reader of ZYZZYVA the journal of west writers & artists for awhile. Always nice
to see good work by unknown writers and new talent given some good exposure.
Operated locally, this literary magazine publishes 3x a year and it makes me happy when it
finally arrives in my mailbox. And, this issue (#83) included a bicycle drawing by Ethan Murrow. Nice!
From their zizipedia “Art: We take seriously our mandate to showcase the work of West Coast writers and artists,
reproducing 30 or so images in each issue, an on-going survey of recent drawing, printmaking, and photography.”
San Francisco based artist Evan Hecox has a lovely set of silk-screen prints for sale over at Arktip. I love the memories that street food, bochos (the local slang for vw taxis)and tremendous billboards bring to me in his set of ‹D.F. prints› A very peculiar perspective in color. The California Donuts in the ‹LA Blacksun print› has a very poetic feeling, represents a vast majority of the 24 hour Los Angeles-thing 🙂
Here are some of my bike favorites:
I first learned about him through Juxtapoz’s December issue as I am a big niño burro/Charles Glaubitz fan. ‹Glaubitz is based out of Tijuana, México & graduated from San Francisco’s California College of the Arts and Crafts.›
This Sunday was super nice weather. No fog, no wind and loads of coffee.
ABOVE: (San Francisco Arts Commission/Public Art Program: “Ghinlon/Transcope,” by Wang Po Shu installed at twelve locations along the new Octavia Boulevard from Market Street to the Hayes Green. The artist created a series of slender pole-like sculptures equipped with kaleidoscopic lenses that function as miniature observatories providing pedestrians with a transformed view of the surrounding environment and passing cars. Laura Domela is a photographer based out of Portland, OR. I have an affinity with portraits and photographs that represent movement and daily life seen with a fresh creative angle.
This bicycle book, described below, is in my book radar. She has a few books available for purchase ‹here›.
FIETSEN: DUTCH [V] RIDE A BICYCLE; CYCLE, [N] BICYCLES. These photographs were taken in Amsterdam, the Netherlands between 21 September and 25 September, 2005. I spent approximately an hour each day photographing bicycle commuters from an apartment on Marnixstraat, and over the span of four and a half days I photographed more than 1600 bicycles.
